Bone Broth vs Collagen Supplements? What You Must Know

Bone Broth in Bowl

Seems like bone broth is all the rage right now. Everywhere you turn, from social media to magazine articles, everyone from celebrities to chefs is touting the near miraculous benefits of long-simmered bone broth. According to bone broth proponents, this magical elixir is supposed to boost your immune system, build your bones, help your arthritis and most importantly, it is supposed to be loaded with collagen that will help smooth your skin and help you look younger.

Bone Broth Claims Evaporate

Not so fast. Turns out that while bone broth can be a good source of protein, scientific research does not support most of those other claims. Bones, even when cooked a long time, don’t release much calcium at all into the broth. And bone broth has not been shown to effectively reduce the pain of arthritis.

As for reducing inflammation, studies show that broth made from chicken bones did thin mucus better than sipping a mug of hot or cold water. And one study did show that chicken bone broth did dampen down the activity of a type of white blood cells known as neutrophils, which are the “first responders” in an infection. But this finding has not been confirmed in a controlled study with adult subjects.

Ok, but what about collagen? Yes, it’s true that bone broth does contain collagen, but it’s not very absorbable. If you can’t digest it, then it won’t do you any good, no matter how much it contains. And there’s the taste. Whether made from beef or chicken bones, most of these broths have a distinct taste and smell. Definitely not something you want to add to your morning coffee or your smoothie!

Some products have even been found to contain high concentrations of heavy metals which are toxic. Plus, many people do not like the idea of consuming cattle or chicken derived products, as they have heard about the cruel and inhumane conditions under which many of these animals are raised.

Nothing Fishy About Marine Collagen Claims

Let’s look at marine collagen. First of all, DeepMarine collagen is derived from the skin and scales of fish. Now some people would immediately be concerned that this type of collagen might also contain mercury. But DeepMarine Collagen is made from end to end in Canada; each batch is therefore tested by independent third-party labs, and not only meets, but exceeds all prescribed standards for heavy metals.

DeepMarine Collagen is sustainably made from the skin and scales of North Atlantic cod, haddock and pollock, parts of the fish that would be discarded anyway. Unlike bone broth, our marine derived collagen is odorless and tasteless and easily mixes into your favorite smoothie, protein drink, yogurt or even coffee or tea.

As for absorption, unlike the collagen in bone broth, our marine collagen is highly bioavailable, with an extremely small particle size.  Marine collagen is 1.5 times more absorbable than other sources making it extremely effective. Better bioavailability means more collagen peptides enter your bloodstream so you can begin getting the benefits, whether that’s reducing arthritis pain or smoother, rejuvenated skin.

So there you have it. Bone broth in one corner and marine collagen in the other. They both come out swinging, but when it comes to standing strong for their claims, DeepMarine Collagen is the clear winner!
