back pain caused by degenerative disc disease

We've all experienced that moment - reaching for something on a high shelf or bending to tie a shoes, when suddenly there with a sharp pain that can take you down to the ground. Back pain affects millions of people daily, but knowing whether it's a temporary discomfort or a sign of disk degeneration can be challenging.

The causes of lower back pain can vary significantly, from simple muscle strain to more serious conditions. When it comes to lower back pain, finding the right back pain treatment starts with proper identification of the underlying issue. There are numerous daily activities that could reveal disk problems. It’s good to be aware of the signs that might point to disk degeneration and keep in mind the various back pain relief options that might work for you.

Discovering Disk Problems

Many people have the signs of degenerative disk problems, but might not recognize them for what they are. Identifying certain daily activities that consistently trigger discomfort is important. Paying attention to, and noting down these patterns can help a health care provider identify when disk degeneration might be the culprit behind back pain.  Make sure you consult with your health care provider so that proper diagnosis and treatment can be mapped out.

One of the most telling signs is how we feel during prolonged sitting. Many of us notice that our lower back pain intensifies after sitting at a desk or in a car for extended periods. Standing up becomes a careful, calculated movement rather than the natural action it once was.

Here are some other key warning signs we should watch for during daily activities:

  • Pain that increases with bending or twisting movements
  • Increased pain when coughing, sneezing, or laughing
  • Numbness or tingling extending into arms or legs
  • Pain that improves with walking or gentle movement

Your physician might suggest

Movement modifications which can be helpful for back pain relief, but instead of stopping activities altogether, it’s important to stay as active as possible by modifying the actions. High-impact activities like running and basketball can aggravate symptoms, so a transition to low-impact exercises such as walking and swimming often provides relief. The key is finding the right balance - staying active without overexerting ourselves.

When it comes to back pain treatment, learning to be mindful during everyday tasks makes a significant difference.

Lifestyle Changes That Affect Pain Levels

Making positive lifestyle changes can significantly impact how we manage disk degeneration and associated back pain. Small modifications in daily routines can lead to substantial improvements in pain levels.

Posture and ergonomic support play important roles in managing our condition. For example, maintaining proper posture, especially during extended sitting periods, can significantly reduce pressure on our spinal disks. Using ergonomic chairs and maintaining proper screen height at work can make a notable difference in our comfort levels.

Here are key lifestyle modifications that we've seen make the most impact:

  • Maintaining proper sleep position with appropriate mattress support and, when on your side put pillows between the knees to prevent strain. When sleeping on your back put a pillow under the knees.
  • Taking regular movement breaks during prolonged sitting. If working at a desk, even investing in stand-up desks can be very helpful.
  • Engaging in carefully executed exercises like low-impact activities - walking or swimming, and also ensuring that you research form modifications for certain exercises to protect the back
  • Using proper body mechanics when lifting objects. Lifting can create huge strain on our muscles and skeleton. It’s advisable to search up proper lifting techniques and ensure that you don’t lift things that are too heavy, and know you limits!
  • Maintaining a healthy weight to reduce spine stress. Healthy body weight reduces the constant strain on the spine so when degenerative disks are in play, it’s advisable to seek advice on the best ways to drop some pounds.

Other Actions to Consider

An additional effective way of managing this pain at home might include “cold therapy”. It’s important not to apply ice to the affected area as that can damage the skin when left on too long. There are some machines that fill with ice and water and then pump that cold water through a pad that straps around the waist. This allows the cold temperatures to be applied for long times and reduce swelling in the back tissues. It’s important to follow instructions carefully so as not to damage skin.

Your physician can provide exercise strategies or refer you to “physiatry”, which is the specialty of rehabilitation medicine, physiotherapy or exercise therapy. The important thing to do is to get a diagnosis and then plan your movements to minimize the aggravating activities.
